Marijampole is constantly growing. In the year 2000, the borders of the municipality expanded to include new farms and villages. Marijampole municipality consists of the town and 6 surrounding communities.
The center of the Marijampole community is the town of Marijampole. Marijampole has 72 residential areas, with a total of 6.8 thousand people, and is the largest community within the region. The community of Marijampole has old and important connections to the world and Lithuania. There are many roads, which pass through the region. The one most important to locals is the Via Baltica, because it leads directly to Europe. Not only roads, but also historical and interesting sites are located in the surrounding communities. To name a few: the marsh of Amalva (a botanical zoological preserve), archaeological monuments in the village of Balsupiai, and historical monuments, like, the monument to Vytautas the Great erected in 1930 in the old Meskučiai cemetery and the church of Skardupiai, which became the headquarters for the partisans of the Tauras regiment after the Second World War.
The community of Igliauka is notable for its nature, history, and culture. Archaeological monuments in the mounds of Vamupiai and Sakaliskiai, and historical monuments to the poet A.Matutis can be found around the community of Igliauka. Additionally, there are several monuments in various places to commemorate those who helped Lithuania establish its indepen-dence. Those on holiday or looking for peace may enjoy the rest-ing place near Igle Lake. Igliauka is predominately an agricultural area, (the greatest farmer of the Marijampole region lives in the village of Sventragis), mainly producing peat which is exported to Germany and Italy. There are 46 residential districts in Igliauka, which are inhabited by 2.6 thousand people.
Gudeliai community is the smallest community within the Marijampole municipality (1.3 thousand pop.). Gudeliai is distinguished for its history, which dates back to the 16th century. In the village of Rudenai there is an archaeological monument located near graves from the 17th century.
The community of Sunskai is situated near Marijampole. This village has 2.7 thousand people. The Via Baltica Highway is located on the out skins of this community.
